Welcome to our August Mewsletter. We hope you’ve enjoyed the beautiful Scottish summer we've had so far! It'll soon be back to the usual Scottish weather, and we (and the cats!) can't wait to snuggle up to enjoy cosy nights at the cafe with a hot chocolate! Grab a cuppa and get comfy - it's time to give you a little update on the things that are happening at Purrple HQ...
We had our first ever “meat free” event on Monday, and it went so well that we've decided to keep it going. More and more people are consciously switching to using products that elimate meat and animal products from their diet and lifestyle. When we opened in December 2017, we embraced Veganuary and have kept many of the meat free alternatives on our menu, and we're proud to be an Official Oatly Barista Stockist! Oatly Barista is an oat milk thats been made so it behaves like a cow's milk when it's steamed, giving the most delicious, creamy cappuccinos, lattes and hot chocolate! It's a really good plant based alternative to cow's milk for those who like creamy milks. Bring along a sceptical friend to try it, and we're sure they'll love it! We are really excited to have found a reliable supplier for our vegan cakes with Poppy at Rawnchy & we are proud to stock her raw vegan cakes 7 days a week! For meat free Mondays, we also have a Vegan Afternoon Tea: complete with scones, “cream” & “butter”. Its an indulgent treat & comes with sandwiches, cakes, scones & drinks for 2 people, and at only £15, its an absolute steal! Our regular vegan friendly stuff is available too – like hot chocolate with marshmallows & cream, nachos & loaded nachos (and lots more!). So get yourselves booked in for the last session on Monday Night @ 7.30pm.
Glasgow’s only pub quiz with cats (and incidentally it isn’t in a pub either, but these are minor details, just go with it), where you get points for answers we like, even if they’re not necessarily correct! It’s a family friendly quiz with plenty of Purrple prizes to be won each week, and of course, there are cats – nuff said! Just head to our website and book the last session on Thursday to come along. Simples!
As you probably know, we limit the number of children allowed to visit on each session, and the minimum age on a normal session is 5 years old. Due to the success of previous trials, we have some toddler-friendly sessions on again next month. The next events will be 3rd – 17th September (Mon – Fri) on the 9.30am & 11am sessions. This means that we will allow children of any age to be booked in (with an adult), though this will still be limited to 6 per session as usual. Simply book as you normally would on our website, and when choosing the number of guests in your party, select your little one as a child over 5 years old (there is no option for toddlers as they’re not usually allowed). We will have extra staff on hand to assist, and answer any questions you may have about handling etc. Questions can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
Join us for the first of our September Yoga sessions, complete with cats and complimentary herbal tea! Our relaxing yoga classes are open to all levels, including complete beginners, and are the perfect way to unwind and de-stress. Surrounded by our lovely kitties (who are pretty amazing at yoga themselves!) you'll take part in an hour-long hatha yoga class. Afterwards, there's plenty of time to get to know the cats and have a bite to eat. Vegan options are available, including our fantastic raw vegan Rawnchy cakes! Doors open at 6.30pm and class starts at 7pm. Bring your own yoga mat or borrow one of ours for £1. If you have any questions about this event, please email email@example.com. Cost is £12 for members & £15 for non-members, £10 of which goes towards the upkeep of the cats. Book here.
We had our first meeting of the Camera Club in July, and it went really well! Those who attended managed to get some fantastic shots, and share techniques. We'll be having the next one on the 26th of August, so whether you’re a professional snapper, or you have just taken your DSLR out of it’s wrapper, or if you’re somewhere in between, we’d love to see you at the café! Your shots may even feature in some of our merchandise, including our 2018 calendar! Booking is on our website, just book your session in the usual way for the last session on Sunday 26th August.
As a huge thank you to those who work in the Health and care sectors, we have introduced a whopping 25% discount off food and drinks all day Monday to Friday! All you need to do is show a work ID (in date) when paying your bill. Offer applies to anyone who works in Care or Healthcare, including Animal Care!
This competition is ongoing at the start of August, and sees visitors descend on our city from all across Europe. There are hundreds of staff and volunteers involved in the events, and to show our thanks to all who are keeping things running smoothly, we're giving all European Championships 2018 staff & volunteers a 20% discount at our Walk Thru window. This is until the end of August, thanks guys!
Who has time to read a whole book these days? You do? Well that’s lovely for you, and we're not at all jealous (!) However, for those who have a little less time available these days, we have created a book club with a difference – Express Book Club! We only ever read short stories and poems, so they are short enough to read whilst we prepare you a coffee, but deep enough to provide great talking points for discussion. The group is guided by our resident philosopher Mike, who moonlights as a Team Leader at Purrple HQ whenever we can tear him away from his books. To join us, simply book the last session on Friday 10th August, and come along. We will have copies of the book available to read whilst we sort your food & drinks, but if you can’t wait, you can have a search online and find this month's story – “The Cat Who Walked By Himself” by Rudyard Kipling. It’s cat themed, of course, and you can read it online here.
Our walk thru window is now fully open on the High Street side of our building – right under the watchful eye of the Tollbooth Steeple! We sell many of our usual menu items including hot & cold drinks, cakes, soups, hot dogs and nachos! If you don’t have time to stop in for an hour with the cats, you can still grab a quick bite or drink as you pass by. We even have a huge purple canopy for when the weather returns back to normal! All of our summer drinks menu is also available to take away, so why not grab some Iced Raspberry spritz, a Mokkito or a Caramel Shake on your way to the park? Pair them with a portion of Nachos & some hot dogs for the ultimate treat picnic!
We get lots and lots of requests for volunteering in many shapes and forms. We have now been open for 6 months, and staff are really starting to find their paws in their role as Cattendants! With that in mind, we have decided that for 2018, we will only be accepting applications from people who are still in school, as part of their S4 Work Experience. If you are interested in spending your work experience week as a Cattendant at Purrple Cat Café, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your full name, your guidance teacher’s name (and email address if possible) the name of your school, and a short message about why you wish to be considered for a place. Please get in contact by 30th August, to allow us time to arrange this appropriately. Further placements will be made available later in the year, so please keep your eyes on our social media if you don’t fit the current criteria for volunteering.
Our very own Cattendant Laura makes a trip every year to Cyprus, to help local charities with their Trap, Neuter & Return programs - designed to care for & manage the huge population of stray cats Cyprus has. Laura will be joined by our assistant manager Jolanta this year & they're currently collecting items to take with them in September. Donations can also be made via PayPal to email@example.com . If you've any spare Euros from holidays, we have a collection tin in the cafe if you'd like to donate. If you have any of the following items, they can be dropped off at the cafe, just let the staff know its for the Cyprus cats:
• Blankets/Cat bedding
• Cat medications (parts if old prescriptions welcome)
• Wound ointment
• Vitamin paste
• Special diet cat food (any)
• Flea collars & other flea & worming treatments (not Bob Martin)
Now we know the sun is still hanging around a little, but there's no denying that the nights are starting to get shorter, and the weather cooling down. With the change of season, comes a change in what's happening at the cafe. We’ll be introducing our Mewvie Nights and evening craft events such as Knit & Natter & adult colouring. We also have plans to celebrate the most black-cat related event of the year - Hallowe'en! Our Cattendants are assembling and preparing a super spooky Halloween party, including a raffle to raise funds for our friends at CATFLAP. There's also plans for some festive fun from mid November, including some carol singing, mulled wine & maybe a visit from our good friend Santa! Yes, its still 19 weeks away, but some of us are just too excited not to start talking about what we're doing in the festive season!
Thanks for taking the time to read this update, and I hope to see you around the café over the next few months! Tracey :) More details of our events can be found on our Facebook & Instagram pages. If you have any questions, feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org.
